The AED 375,000 figure is the most quoted number in UAE Corporate Tax, and one of the most misread. It is not an exemption you either qualify for or lose. It is a band that sits inside every taxable person's calculation. Understanding how it works removes a surprising amount of anxiety, and it prevents the two mistakes businesses make most often.
How the band actually works
Taxable income up to and including AED 375,000 is taxed at 0%. Taxable income above that figure is taxed at 9%. The 9% applies only to the excess, not to the whole amount. A business with AED 375,000 of taxable income pays nothing. A business with AED 600,000 pays 9% on AED 225,000, which is AED 20,250. The first AED 375,000 is always taxed at 0%, whatever the total. This is a marginal band, in the same way an income tax band works elsewhere, not a cliff you fall off.
It is taxable income, not revenue
The first mistake is to test the threshold against turnover. The AED 375,000 is measured against taxable income, which is profit after allowable deductions and adjustments, not sales. A company can turn over several million dirhams and still sit near or below the threshold once genuine business costs are taken into account. Reading the threshold against revenue leads businesses to assume they owe tax when they may not, or to misjudge the provision in their accounts.
The threshold does not remove the obligations
The second mistake is to treat a result below AED 375,000 as a reason to do nothing. It is not. A taxable person below the threshold still has to register for Corporate Tax, still has to file a return, and still has to keep records that support the figure. The 0% outcome is the result of a calculation the Authority can ask you to show. A business that pays no tax but cannot evidence why is in a weaker position than one that pays a modest amount and can.
Where it interacts with other reliefs
The band does not stand alone. Small Business Relief, where elected and available, can treat a business as having no taxable income at all, which is a different mechanism from the 0% band. A Qualifying Free Zone Person applies 0% to its qualifying income under its own conditions, and the AED 375,000 band interacts with that rather than replacing it. Knowing which relief you are relying on matters, because each has its own tests and its own paperwork.
What to do about it
Calculate the threshold properly, against taxable income, not turnover. Register and file even when the result is 0%. Keep the working that gets you from accounting profit to the taxable figure, so the 0% is defensible if it is ever questioned. And check whether another relief serves you better than the band alone. The AED 375,000 is generous, but it rewards businesses that treat it as the output of a calculation, not as a licence to look away.
