The Tax Registration Number, or TRN, is the identifier that ties a business to the FTA's tax system. You need one to charge VAT, to issue a valid tax invoice, and to appear as a legitimate registered business to your customers and suppliers. Getting a TRN is part of VAT registration rather than a separate application, and this walkthrough explains where it comes from, what it is for, and the checks that matter around it.
What a TRN is and is not
A TRN is a unique fifteen-digit number issued when a business registers for VAT. It is not a licence and not a Corporate Tax number; it is specifically the VAT identity of the business. Once issued, it appears on your tax invoices and is how the FTA and your counterparties recognise you as VAT-registered. A business that charges VAT without a valid TRN is doing something it should not, and a customer paying VAT to an unregistered supplier has a problem of its own.
The steps
You obtain a TRN by completing VAT registration on EmaraTax. The number is issued on approval, so the application is really the VAT registration application.
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm you are required or eligible to register for VAT |
| 2 | Log in to EmaraTax and start VAT registration |
| 3 | Enter business, licence, and turnover details |
| 4 | Upload the trade licence, owner IDs, and financial evidence |
| 5 | Submit and await approval |
| 6 | Receive the TRN and your VAT registration certificate |
The TRN is your VAT identity, not a general tax licence. Charging VAT without one, or accepting an invoice that shows an invalid TRN, both create real problems worth avoiding.
Verify a TRN before you rely on it
The FTA provides a way to check whether a TRN is valid and which business it belongs to. This matters in both directions. Before you reclaim input VAT on a supplier's invoice, it is prudent to know the TRN on it is genuine, because a reclaim supported by a false or wrong number can be denied. And presenting your own valid TRN reassures customers that the VAT you charge is legitimate. A quick verification is cheap insurance against a rejected claim later.
What to do about it
If you are required or eligible to register for VAT, complete the EmaraTax registration and your TRN is issued as part of it. Put the TRN on every tax invoice you raise, keep the registration certificate safe, and use it consistently. When a supplier's invoice carries a TRN you have not seen before, verify it before you rely on it for an input claim. The TRN is a small piece of data that does a lot of work, and treating it with a little care on both sides of a transaction avoids the disputes that come from an invalid one.
